Book reviews for 12-15 Year-Old Girls

Where the Crawdads sing

by Delia Owens.

I thought this was a very good book, but quite romantic, sad and shocking at the same time.

Listen to the moon

by Michael Morpurgo

I LOVED this book. Honestly, it was great. I was never really into Michael Morpurgo, but this book was just written so beautifully. And I also learned quite a bit about the First World War, which I enjoyed.

Listen to the Moon

by Michael Morpurgo

It's 1915. Alfie and his father are out fishing, when they find a girl, in an uninhabited island in the Scillies. A mysterious injured girl. She has no idea who she is. Where she's from. Or how she came to be there. She can only say one word: Lucy. Some islanders suggest she is a ghost. Or a mermaid. Or possibly, a German spy?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was wonderful. I've never been a fan of Michael Morpurgo, but this has most DEFINITELY changed my mind. Gosh, it was just beautifully written. I think it was one of my favourite books.

Educated

by Tara Westover

This book is based on a true story about the author herself. She was born in Idaho to a father who opposed to public education. Since she didn´t attend school, she´d help her mum stew herbs, since she was a herbalist and self-taught midwife, or help her father in his junkyard. But when she first stepped into a classroom at 17, she fell in love with learning. After hard work and teaching herself everything she´d missed out on all her school years, she proceeded to sign up to some of the greatest universities in the world.

A fascinating story, that taught me a lot. I think most people should read this, to learn that the sky´s the limit!

Life of Pi

I thought this book was great. I really enjoyed it. It was quite hard to get into, and sad. Really sad. But I highly enjoyed it.

Life of Pi

Yann Martel

Pi is a sixteen year old boy. He is the only survivor of a sinking of a cargo ship. He lost his family. And as if bobbing on the wild Pacific, shipwrecked, after watching a cargo ship sink wasn't enough, he is stuck with a hyena, a zebra, a female orangutan...and a 450 pound Royal Bengal tiger.

This was another truly amazing book. I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit sad. It can also be a bit gruesome, but this story will stay with you long after you've read it. And you should bear in mind that it can take a while to get into the book...but it is well worth it .

I recommend it to readers who don't mind a bit of gruesomeness, but apart from that, I'd recommend this to everyone over the age of 13.

The Girl of Ink and Stars

by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

I found this book disappointing. So many people had recommended it to me, so my hopes were high, and then when I read it, there were bits that didn´t have enough description in them, and so that made it very blotchy, were there were some parts you just didn´t understand.

The Girl of Ink and Stars

by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

This is a fantasy book about a girl called Isabella whose mother passed away, so it´s just her and her dad. When school is cancelled because a girl from her class (Cata) is killed, Isabella´s best friend and the governor's daughter, Lupe, goes to look for the creature who killed Cata. Isabella dresses up as a boy and, along with the Governor and his men, goes to look for Lupe.

I found this book disappointing, because I had high hopes for it since it had been recommended to me by various people. It was just a bit of a confusing book for me, and didn't have enough description in some areas. So, overall, I wouldn't recommend it.

Deathless girls

The Deathless Girls

By Kiran Millwood Hargrave

This is a fantasy book about a girl called Lil, who, on the day where she and her twin sister Kizzy are to discover their fate, are captured and enslaved by the horrible Boyar Valcar. Far away from their Traveller community (I imagined them as gypsies) , and forced to work in the harsh castle kitchens, Lil finds comfort in a girl called Mira. But too soon she also learns about the Dragon, a mysterious and terrifying man of myth, who takes girls as gifts. As he takes Kizzy, Lil knows she must be with her sister, even if it means becoming an immortal vampyre. (This isn't a typo, they are actually written like that in the book).

This was the first book I read by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and I really enjoyed it. It includes a bit of strong language and content, so I don't recommend it for people under 12.

This is a realistic book about a girl called Maia, who is an orphan. One day, she finds out that she has distant relatives up the Amazon. So she goes to live with them and Miss Minton, her governess, accompanies her. But when they arrive, two spiteful, posh cousins are waiting for her. They're always complaining, and they seem to hate her. But when she meets a mysterious boy, who lives alone on the wild river shores, Maia begins a spectacular journey to the heart of an extraordinary new world.

The Diary of Anne Frank

by Anne Frank

I wouldn´t recommend it, but I think it would appeal to most children. I found this book very difficult to read. I got bored of it because I didn´t find it very interesting, although I love reading and learning about the war. But I think Anne Frank was an amazing girl.

This is a classic. It is a real diary, written by Anne Frank whilst the Nazis were looking for Jews. As her family was Jewish, she had to go into hiding, along with some other family friends. She keeps, written in her diary, her emotions and thoughts whilst going through this difficult time.

I didn't really enjoy this book just because I found it a bit boring. But it's incredible how this actually happened...it is a real diary. Which is just amazing and awful at the same time.

Me Before You

Me Before You

by Jojo Moyes

Me before you is a realistic book about Louisa, who goes to work with a quadriplegic called Will. It takes them a while to get used to each other, but then Lou finds out that he wants to go to Dignitas. That is when she falls in love with him. She does everything to make him see that life is worth living, that everyone goes through ups and downs, but it is worth it. Still, he chooses to go. After much thought and grief, she decides to go with him. It is awfully sad, but beautiful at the same time.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of romance books. I'm one of those people that still, at the age of thirteen, would squirm whilst watching a film and there is some kind of kissing. But I really, REALLY liked this book. And the film (on Netflix) is great too. But read the book before you watch the film, because it makes it more magical.

After You

by Jojo Moyes

This is the sequel to “Me before you”. After Lou comes back from Dignitas, she is full of grief and sadness. But after having an accident, she meets Sam, who works in the ambulance that took her to hospital. They quickly become friends...and a bit more than that. Then, a strange girl called Lily appears at her door, claiming she is Will’s daughter. Overwhelmed by emotion of seeing a bit of Will, Lou turns into a roommate/sister/mum to her. But when she gets an amazing job in New York, she has a tough decision to make. Should she stay in her comfort zone, but with the people she loves? Or should she go to New York, and explore, just as Will told her?

This book was a bit disappointing. I was expecting something as good as, or even better, than "Me Before You". I mean, don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as the previous book. I loved continuing Lou's journey, though, and seeing what happened to her, as she is such an amazing character. So, I would recommend it to those who have read the prequel, "Me Before You".

Still Me

by Jojo Moyes

Lou arrives in New York, to work with Leonard Gopnik and his much younger wife, Agnes. She is determined to keep her relationship with Sam, thousands of miles away. But when she meets Joshua Ryan, she gets reminded of her past.  Soon, Lou feels torn between Fifth avenue where she works and a vintage clothing shop. And when matters come to a head, she has to ask herself: Who is Louisa Clark? And how do you find the courage to follow your heart—wherever that may lead?

As I said before, the book just seems to get worse, or less good, by the book. I didn't think "Still Me" was any good, but I enjoyed seeing how Lou's story ended. So, I would only recommend it if you want to see how Lou's story ends.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

by J.K. Rowling

If you haven´t read these books, I suggest you run to the closest bookshop and buy the lot. You´ve most probably already read “Harry Potter”, and if not, I bet LOADS of people have told you to read it.  And, honestly, take their advice. It might take some time to get into them, but seriously, they are all amazing. These books take you to a different world, of magic.

I don't know how to start this. I think most people know what Harry Potter is about. But for those who don't, here it is: Harry Potter has lived with his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and cousin Dudley since he was a baby. They treat him awfully (I mean, his room is the cupboard under the stairs) until he gets LOADS of letters from "Hogwarts", addressed to him. His Uncle doesn't let him open them, so Hagrid, a half giant, appears andtells him he´s a wizard. Harry goes to Hogwarts, and the adventures begin!

I am a MASSIVE Harry Potter fan. I read it when I was 9 and just fell in love with the books. Both my siblings have found it tricky getting into it, but I assure you, once you do get into them, they are just the most magical books. And the books get better and better in the series.

As you have probably gathered, I love reading. And I rarely give up on books. But I just couldn't continue reading this book...it was just SO uneventful. It has 543 pages, and I read 131, and what had happened was the main character had gone with her father to visit this lady.

Therefore, I do not recommend this book. But, If you've already read it and have enjoyed it, or want to read it anyway, here are some other books written by Cornelia Funke:

This is a fantasy book about a boy called Eragon. His mother dumped him with his uncle when he was a baby, and so he grows up with his uncle and his cousin, who are inseparable. He must fight King Galbatorix to bring happiness to Alagaesia. The Empire´s fate may rest in his hands.

Smile

by Raina Telgemeier

Smile is a realistic book (it really is realistic, since it is a real story about the authors childhood). It’s about the drama of breaking your teeth. The main character, Raina, falls and breaks her two front teeth. Then she goes through a series of dramatic dental appointments, surgery and problems every 12-year-old girl goes through (like Social Life, boys, etc).

I enjoyed this book and I quite like thinking back on it, since I have braces and I'm not the most popular girl, and have had some school struggles. So this book kind of helped me understand that these problems happen to most teens, and I'm not the only one. But the language is very basic and I know my 9 year old sister enjoyed them too, so I wouldn't recommend it to people over 14.

Enchantée

by Gita Trelease

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fantastical, easy read. And it also taught me about the French revolution in 1789.

This book is a fantasy book but based in the times of the French revolution. Camille Durbonne is a seventeen-year-old girl. When her parents die of smallpox, she has to work “la magie”...magic that uses sorrow to work. Then she starts going to Versailles, transforming herself into a baroness, and quickly makes money. But, when the revolution erupts, Camille must choose between a path that is frail, but whole, and a path that is strong, but broken

I would recommend this book to girls between the age of 12 and 14. It is interesting, and it helped me understand the French revolution... something that I hadn't studied at school yet. You also might learn a word or two in French (it is based in Paris, and therefore has some French words in...but there's a glossary at the back).

I quite enjoyed this book. It was a good, unique, story. I think younger people would enjoy it even more, like from ages 9-12. But I would recommend it for higher ages if you want a simple, enjoyable, easy read.

I think this book was ok. I enjoyed it as a light read, but I think it would be better for younger readers, because the vocabulary was quite basic.

August Pullman is a boy. He wants a normal life. But it isn’t easy when people state at you when you walk past them. Or scream when they see you. When he starts school for the first time, in 5th grade, he gets bullied. But is it because people really hate him, or are they scared? This is the story of a remarkable boy, who has to stay strong.

This is an incredible story, which I think everyone should read. It is an inspiring story, and yet another book that I don't think I'll ever forget.

Murder Most Unladylike

by Robin Stevens

This is the first book of the Murder Most Unladylike series. Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong just set up a secret detective agency...but they had one slight problem. They didn’t have any Mysteries to solve (Unless you count The Case of Lavinia’s Missing Tie. Which they don’t.)

But when Hazel discovers the Science Mistress, Miss Bell, lying dead on the gym floor, a case starts. Because when they return, the body has disappeared...

I really enjoyed this book. It was very beautifully written, and not a difficult read. After reading this, I found out that I really enjoyed Murder Mysteries, and so I read some of Robin Stevens' other books, and the more books of hers that I read, the more interesting they became.

I would recommend these books from ages 10+.

Driving Over Lemons

by Chris Stewart

I think the reason why I enjoyed this books so much is because of my connection with Andalucia...it was my childhood. I could connect with every word, remembering my life in Spain. So if you are interested in Andalucia, or are a Spaniard (like me) that speaks English, then this is the book for you!

Driving Over Lemons

by Chris Stewart

When Chris Stewart decides to move to Las Alpujarras, an odball region in south Granada, Andalucía, he is optimistic. His farm, El Valero, is on a patch of mountain studded with olive, almond and lemons groves, sited on the wrong side of the river, with no access road, water supply or electricity. And yet, he forges a friendship of a lifetime with his resourceful peasant neighbour Domingo, watches his baby daughter grow up happily there, and written this book.

As I said, this book just reminded me of Andalucia... not the fake Andalucia that you get in places like Marbella or the Costa del Sol, but the real, countrysidy, hot, unique Andalucia. I really enjoyed reading this.

Neverwhere

The only thing from keeping me giving this book 5 stars is the ending... there is no fixed ending. We don't really know what happens to the main character. But, it was a really good book overall. Very well written.

Neverwhere

by Neil Gaiman

When Richard Mayhew finds a bleeding girl on the pavement, his life is turned upside down. Literally. Because soon, he enters the world of London Below. The girl, whose name is Door, is on the run from two assassins. As if that wasn´t bad enough, Richard´s act of kindness has led him to a place with monsters, angels, a Beast in a labyrinth and an Earl who holds court in a Tube train...London Below.

As I said, the only thing from keeping me giving it 5 stars is there is no fixed ending. Apart from that, it is pretty much flawless. I really, really loved "Neverwhere". It was a really brilliant book, with a wonderful storyline.

A Wrinkle in Time

by Madeleine L´Engle

When Charles Wallace Murry goes searching through a 'wrinkle in time' for his lost father, he finds himself on an evil planet where all life is enslaved by a huge pulsating brain known as 'It'. How Charles, his sister Meg and friend Calvin find and free his father makes this a very special and exciting mixture of fantasy and science fiction, which all the way through is dominated by the funny and mysterious trio of guardian angels known as Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which. (I copied the resume off Amazon because I couldn´t remember the story!)

I´ve heard that this book is a classic. That it was supposed to be REALLY good. Well, it certainly disappointed me. The most exciting thing about it was the beginning, where the first sentence is "It was a dark and stormy night". I think it was one of the worst books I have ever read, unfortunately.

Luke loves comics. Especially comics about Superheroes. But when he has a one-in-a-lifetime experience to become one, he needs a wee. And when he comes back, his older brother, Zack, has been given superpowers. Luke is outraged! Zack doesn´t deserve it! He´s never even read a comic! This book was nothing out of the ordinary. A very basic book, with not much to it. The storyline was just a bit too "lacking in something", you know? But I didn´t dislike it. Maybe it would be better for slightly younger people...9 or 10?

His twin sister is always ignoring him. But when granddad suddenly disappears under the mattress that used to lead them to a land of imagination, Arthur rushes after him, only to find that their land is real ...and has been taken over by the evil Crowky...

Bruno, who is nine years old, knows nothing about the Holocaust. He doesn’t know about the terrible cruelties that are inflicted by his country to several millions of people of other counties in Europe.

All he knows is that he had to move from a comfortable mansion in Berlin to a house in a deserted area, where there is nothing to do and no-one to play with. This is until he meets Shmuel, a boy that lives on the other side of the wired fence on the edge of his house and that strangely, like everyone else on that side, wears what looks like striped pyjamas.

I really enjoyed this book... especially towards the end. I found the beginning hard to get into, but persisting was good, because the ending was so worth it.
